Making International Education More Accessible
Studying abroad offers students the opportunity to explore new cultures, expand their academic experience, and develop valuable international connections.
However, organizing an independent study abroad experience can be challenging. Different universities operate under different admission requirements, academic grading systems, and administrative processes, making international mobility more complex than it needs to be.
WeAreFreeMovers is a digital platform designed to simplify this journey.
The platform connects students with universities worldwide, allowing them to explore international study opportunities and apply independently, without the restrictions of traditional exchange agreements.
At AELIG, we contributed to the platform's development by integrating grade-conversion workflows and building an analytics dashboard for universities, helping institutions interpret international academic information and analyze student statistics more effectively.
The Challenge: Connecting Different Academic Systems
International education brings together students and institutions operating within different academic frameworks.
One of the challenges universities face when evaluating international candidates is understanding academic performance across different grading systems.
A grade awarded in one country may follow a completely different scale from the grades used by the receiving institution.
Without consistent conversion methods, comparing academic results can require additional administrative work and introduce uncertainty into the evaluation process.
At the same time, universities need meaningful information about the students interested in their programs.
Student applications generate valuable data, but transforming that information into useful statistics requires appropriate tools.
These challenges highlighted two important needs:
- Academic grade conversion: Supporting the interpretation of grades originating from different educational systems.
- Institutional analytics: Providing universities with a clearer view of student statistics through accessible visualizations.
The objective was to introduce these capabilities into the existing WeAreFreeMovers ecosystem, making international academic information easier to interpret and analyze.
Our Solution: Grade Conversion and University Analytics
We worked on two complementary components of the platform: the integration of grade-conversion workflows and the development of a dedicated analytics dashboard.
Together, these features support a more data-driven approach to international student mobility.
Integrating International Grade Conversion
Academic grading systems vary significantly across countries.
Some educational institutions use numerical scales, while others adopt percentages, letter grades, or alternative evaluation methods.
As a result, interpreting an international student's academic record requires an understanding of the grading system used by their home institution.
We integrated grade-conversion workflows into the WeAreFreeMovers platform to support this process.
The integration brings international grading tools into the existing digital environment, making grade-related information easier to manage as part of the platform's broader workflow.
This reduces the need to treat grade conversion as an entirely separate activity and supports a more consistent experience for handling international academic information.
Building a University Analytics Dashboard
Beyond individual applications, universities benefit from understanding the broader characteristics of students interested in their programs.
Student-related data can provide insights into academic backgrounds, applicant characteristics, and other relevant statistics.
We developed an analytics dashboard designed to help universities explore and interpret this information.
By presenting student statistics through a dedicated interface, the dashboard makes institutional data more accessible and easier to understand.
Instead of relying exclusively on raw datasets, university stakeholders can consult organized information through a visual experience designed around their analytical needs.
Turning Academic Data into Actionable Insights
Data becomes valuable when it can support real decisions.
For universities participating in international mobility programs, having access to organized student information can improve their understanding of prospective applicants and the characteristics of their international audience.
An effective analytics dashboard should do more than display numbers.
It should organize information clearly, make relevant statistics easy to find, and help users interpret data without unnecessary complexity.
Our work focused on translating the platform's analytical requirements into a practical interface for institutional users.
The goal was to create an environment where student statistics could be explored through a structured and accessible digital experience.
Integrating New Capabilities into an Existing Platform
Developing features for an established digital product introduces a different set of challenges compared with building a standalone application.
New functionality must operate within the platform's existing architecture, data structures, and user experience.
For WeAreFreeMovers, our contribution required connecting grade-conversion capabilities and institutional analytics with the broader platform.
The development approach focused on integration, maintainability, and usability.
Rather than introducing disconnected tools, we worked to bring these capabilities into the existing ecosystem, allowing academic information and student statistics to become part of a more cohesive digital experience.
This reflects an important aspect of our work at AELIG: developing software that fits the operational requirements of a product while remaining practical for the people who use it.
Supporting Students and Universities Across Borders
WeAreFreeMovers addresses an important challenge in higher education: making independent international mobility easier to navigate.
Students can explore opportunities worldwide, create a reusable profile, and submit applications to partner universities without paying platform service fees.
Universities, meanwhile, benefit from a dedicated platform that connects them with international candidates and supports their application processes.
Our technical contributions complement this model by helping institutions work with academic information more effectively.
The grade-conversion integration supports the interpretation of international grading systems, while the analytics dashboard provides a clearer view of student-related statistics.
Together, these features contribute to several objectives:
- Consistency: Bringing grade-conversion functionality into the platform's existing workflows.
- Accessibility: Making student statistics easier for institutional users to consult.
- Efficiency: Reducing reliance on disconnected tools for academic data interpretation.
- Data visibility: Providing a structured environment for exploring student information.
- Maintainability: Integrating new capabilities into an established digital platform.
The Outcome: Better Tools for International Academic Mobility
Through our collaboration with WeAreFreeMovers, we delivered two functional components designed to support the platform's institutional operations.
The integration of grade-conversion workflows helps bring international grading information into the platform, while the dedicated university dashboard makes student statistics easier to explore and understand.
The project demonstrates how targeted software development can strengthen an existing digital product without requiring a complete transformation of its architecture.
For WeAreFreeMovers, these capabilities extend the tools available to universities participating in its international education ecosystem.
For AELIG, the project reflects our expertise in backend integration, data-driven applications, and developing practical software features around real business requirements.
Looking Ahead
International education continues to create opportunities for students and institutions worldwide.
As digital platforms make academic mobility more accessible, the ability to connect different educational systems and interpret international student data will remain important.
WeAreFreeMovers demonstrates how technology can simplify the relationship between students and universities, while specialized integrations can make the underlying processes more effective.
At AELIG, we develop software solutions that connect systems, simplify complex workflows, and turn data into meaningful digital experiences.
Our collaboration with WeAreFreeMovers reflects this approach: understanding the operational challenge, integrating the right technologies, and delivering practical tools that support an existing product.
